Kind of. There's a mechanic called "friendship" in which it shows how much of a bound you have with your pokemon. The lower it is, the sadder the pokemon is when its with you.

No, but a pokemon's ability to Dive under water for an extended period of time allows you to spend as much time as you want underwater and resurface in certain lit areas. For those with a fear of drowning, it can be a shock to see for the first time, and be anxiety-inducing slowly swimming from one end to another. However, it's a relief to know you don't have to worry about drowning nor your pokemon (You can even bring out a fire type pokemon when you swim through the seagrass, and they are not harmed by the water, assumably fighting in a big air bubble) and simply reminding yourself to breathe and take a break when you need to.

There is a scene in the beginning where someone is getting chased in circles fast by a pokemon, and they urge you to "Quick!" pick a pokemon from their basket to save them! Rest-assured, you can take your time deciding. I once had to step away from the game to go do something during my indecision.
