When an insidious supernatural force edges its way into a seemingly straightforward investigation into the gruesome murder of a young boy, it leads a seasoned cop and an unorthodox investigator to question everything they believe in.
This tv show contains 42 potentially triggering events.
(minor spoilers for the first 2 episodes) The main villain is a malevolent entity that preys on children. (TW: CSA) It is mentioned that one of the victims was sodomized by an object. This not shown, just mentioned. It is implied that this is part of the entity’s MO.
There’s a character who isn’t explicitly labeled as autistic but she is 100% autistic-coded. Although the character is a savant (and that’s a trope many of us are understandably tired of), she is also complex and nuanced and not a caricature… in my autistic opinion, this is obviously a subjective and complicated subject. Not sure if the actress is neurodivergent.
In a very tense and terrifying moment with very loud noises (gunshots), an autistic-coded character covers her ears and the sounds become distorted. It seems like she’s going to meltdown but she doesn’t.
Not shown in detail but implied. There’s a neurodivergent character and she talks about her childhood, how she was subjected to testing and “behaviorists” and how her parents hoped “the white coats” would “cure” her of her idiosyncrasies. She isn’t explicitly labeled autistic but is heavily autistic-coded.
There’s a neurodivergent character, not sure if her actress is also neurodivergent. No one with physical disabilities is played by someone able-bodied.
Jack, arguably the most violent human in the series, is implied to have some form of mental illness, which led him to fail a psychological exam in the military. It is never stated what it is, and one may just be able to dismiss it as anger issues though.
The main antagonist picks their victims up to a month prior to killing a child. In that time, they stalk the person whose identity they're going to steal. They then stalk the family of the dead child after. We see them standing in the background of a few scenes.
There is no gaslighting in the series. While several characters argue about whether or not they believe the more supernatural elements of the plot, nobody intentionally sets out to convince another that they're crazy. Those that said yes probably don't realize what gaslighting is.
Addiction is one of the main themes of the series. Many characters are addicts or former addicts to smoking, narcotics, drinking, sex, and watching others suffer.
A mutilated boar is shown in S1E2 at 16:10. From 11:08 to 11:19 you see the man dragging a deer carcass from the car and from 22:19 to 22:30 you see that the deer carcass has been mutilated. You see the man dragging another deer carcass from 2:07 to 2:10 in S1E5. In S1E8 you see a man eating from a deer carcass at 53:20 until the credits. There are a few, old carcasses and bones shown in S1E10. The worst is a gutted armadillo at 17:25.
There is one in S01 Ep09 about 40 minutes in when they head into the woods.
In S01 Ep10 the already mentioned one about 3 minutes in during the shooting. Same Ep at 9 minutes in someone gets bitten by one.
(S1E1) throughout the first half of the episode, a molestation is alluded to, with character's asking a suspected criminal questions like "do you like little boys?" At the 34 minute mark, it is revealed in dialogue that a young child was sodomized with an object. In later episodes, the characters blatantly state the child was raped. (S1E3 & E4) we learn of 3 other children killed in a similar manner. Although it is not mentioned explicitly they were sexually assaulted, it can be extrapolated from the dialogue.
(S1E2 - 13:00) a character is shot in the neck and struggles to breathe. We hear them choking for a full minute. (25:29) a character is heard strangling for a few seconds.
Technically no, because you can argue that the humans weren't being eaten by another human. However, this creature resembles a human, so this may be still be triggering.
The main antagonist chooses a victim in order to inflict the most amount of psychological damage to their family. In S1E5 a character is beaten for refusing to follow orders, and sees their mother doing the beating for extra psychological pain.
The lead protagonist's 15 year old son died before the start of the series. His death is brought up in dialogue often. (S1E1 - within the first 5 minutes) the plot of the series is kicked off when the dismembered body of an 11 year old is discovered. (S1E2) it is revealed that a shooter who was killed by the police was a 16 year old. We see their death from two different perspectives before the reveal. (S1E3) we see a newspaper article about two little girls who were murdered. (S1E4) during a montage starting at around 26:00, we see a brief glimpse of one of the bodies of the dead girls as someone talks about all who were affected by the murders. She appears to be about 11 or 12 years old.
There are 2 attempted kidnappings shown on screen--one adult victim, and one child victim (separate incidents). Several other victims were kidnapped off screen, ending fatally.
(S1E2) there is unexpected breaking glass at 25:29. (S1E4) in the last 5 minutes, a character researches a monster on their laptop. When they pull up images, screaming can be heard on the soundtrack. Although it is softer than most modern movies, it can still startle. At least the first one can.
Some characters are infected by the antagonist, which causes them to do the antagonist's bidding, but they're still in control of their bodies. In fact, the antagonist tortures them if they disobey.
There’s a malevolent demonic entity who shapeshifts and it sometimes appears as people who have died. Deceased characters appear to their living loved ones, it’s unclear if these interaction are real or imagined, the deceased looks normal/alive when shown.
Many of the main characters are detectives (former and current) and other law enforcement officers and they are generally stereotypically “good” cops. I wouldn’t say the show is super pro-cop but you are rooting for the detectives to stop the evil entity terrorizing the town.
(S1E1) we briefly see two characters in a waiting room get approached by a doctor. There is no sound. (S1E2 - 14:30) we see the lead character sitting on a hospital bed while a doctor checks his blood pressure and asks him basic questions. An officer questions another character in the hallway. (33:46-35:49) we see a character visit another who has just given birth. Two characters talk outside the hospital room of a character who is brain dead.
The character is not stated to be autistic during the course of the show, only "unique" or "different". However, Holly displays several traits of autism, and an autistic person could see several similarities between her character and their reality. She is made fun of by other characters for her differences. Her family also attempted to "cure" her when she was a child.
(S1E3) a character with stereotypical neuroatypical traits is described as "parking their spaceship" when choosing a home. Later in the episode, they are described as a "full-tilt bull goose loony." We also hear in dialogue that their parents tried to cure them because their parents were scared.
Several conversations take place in a strip club, where we can see female characters in various stages of nudity dancing in a suggestive manner:
(S1E1) 19:34, lasts a few minutes. We see this scene again from a different POV at the 24 minute mark. One of the customer's is motorboating one of the stripper's butts. A topless stripper is giving a lap dance. (S1E2) 20:34-21:36 (S1E3) 8 minutes in. This scene lasts a few minutes. We have another brief scene at the 47 minute mark. (S1E4) from 28:15-30:15. (S1E5) 14:00-15:00 (S1E6) 46:40-47:45 (S1E7) 22:50-23:30 (S1E4 - 43:59-44:30) there is a sex scene. No nudity. We just see the two characters from the waist up, creatively posed, moving suggestively under bed sheets. At one point, a leg is revealed.
(S1E1) it is revealed in dialogue that a character died in a car accident. (S1E4) in a lengthy exposition scene starting at 26:00, we see brief images accompanying a story about the people affected by the murder of two girls, most of whom killed themselves. We see a character get into their car and start driving fast. They crash, killing themselves. We don't see the impact, but we do hear it and see the fiery wreck after.
(S1E1 - 3 minutes in) we see police investigating a body in the woods. The view is partially covered, but we see part of a dismembered body complete with realistic effects. We later see an out of focus shot of the body where we can see the body was impaled. (15:00-20:00) we see several witnesses testify to seeing another character covered in blood. We see the various recollections played out on screen. (S1E2 - 11:48-12:20) there is a shootout. We see blood splatter and noticeable wounds appear. It ends with the shooter getting shot in the head. We see the wound and blood from two different perspectives. Another character is shot in the neck. We see blood gushing from between his fingers as he tries to plug the wound. (S1E3 - 10 minutes in) a character remembers the shootout. We see blood splatter and gun wounds from a third perspective from before. (S1E3 -34 minutes in) we see a character cut into his leg, pull back the skin, and withdraw a shiv. Despite this description, there is very little blood or gore, but the scene was still disturbing. (57 minutes) slight blood spray from a neck wound. Blood splatter on wall. (S1E4 - 9:50) a deer is killed. We see blood splatter. Later in the episode, we see it's partially eaten corpse. (26:00) during an exposition scene, we see a few corpses in very brief images. One has blood speckled around their eye, and the other has died of an overdose, and is pale and bloated. (S1E5 - 49:38) as the police examine a body, we see a close up of a bloody hand, and a small pool of blood. (S1E5 - 45 minutes in) a character is beaten. We see blood speckles around their mouth.
(S1E2 - 11:48) a character is seen walking up to a group of people. The camera follows them from behind. We see them pull out a handgun and start firing at the group. There are noticeable bullet wounds as characters in the group are shot in succession, 4 total. The lead character returns fire, and the shooter collapses. We then immediately see a replay of the events from a different perspective, slowed down. (S1E3 - 10 minutes in) one of the surviving characters is watching news footage and sees flashbacks to the shooting from episode 2. We don't see the guns, but hear muted gunshots, and see a slow motion bullet hitting a character. (S1E4 - 9:50) we see a deer shot. The camera appears to be looking down a rifle scope in this scene. (46:44) two characters are shot in the head, one after the other. (S1E5 - 48:00) a character holds another at gunpoint. Within a few minutes, we see the police shoot the shooter with multiple automatic rifles.
