A samurai lord has bartered away his newborn son's organs to forty-eight demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield. Yet, the abandoned infant survives thanks to a medicine man who equips him with primitive prosthetics—lethal ones with which the wronged son will use to hunt down the multitude of demons to reclaim his body one piece at a time, before confronting his father. On his journeys the young hero encounters an orphan who claims to be the greatest thief in Japan.
In ep1, a stray starving puppy is roughly handled and threatened in front of a child to make the child submit to a beating (which he does to save the dog)
SPOILER: at the very end, it's hinted that the two main characters will end up together (throughout the show, she's a young child and he's a young adult). not a big age gap for adults, but we've only known them as children.
In background scenes you can see beheaded people head, Episode 4 multiple people are beheaded slowly, Episode 6 someone’s beheaded and another head is cut in half,
Many people have amputated body parts from the war including dead people shown and one character has dedicated their life to helping make people prosthetics so this is shown a lot
Episode 2 they talk about a mothers death briefly, Episode 4 they shown a shrine for two dead parents, Episode 9 dead mother and father flashbacks, Episode 13 someone seen as a mother figure dies,
Once, a man uses a demon-inhabited sword and it drive him on a killing spree which he cannot stop himself from. He retains his identity until death, but he is possessed by the bloodlust of the sword beyond his capacity to control it.
No eating disorders but when the main characters struggle with money and can’t afford food so often are starving, many characters are severely underweight due to starvation,
Episode 5 and 6 there is heavy and upsetting sex worker content DO NOT WATCH THESE EPISODES IF IT TRIGGERS YOU (Spoilers ahead………………….. The character is ashamed of being a sex worker and feels “dirty” because of it, Another person catches her (it’s a horrible and triggering scene) and says she’s dirty because of it there is another sex scene with her in it that’s sad in the end she is killed off because of her sex work )
It could most accurately be described as bittersweet, as there are some victories and some tragedies, but I was definitely upset by key points in the conflict resolution and the friend I introduced this show to was as well.
