Becker
TV Show • 1998
ReportSynopsis
Becker is a dedicated, outspoken and talented doctor with a gruff exterior. While he tends to offend those who try to get close to him, he is extremely dedicated to his medical practice in the Bronx, N.Y., where he always goes the extra mile to help those in need. But Dr. John Becker looks at the world around him and sees a society gone mad, full of incongruities and just plain wrong thinking. And he has no qualms about saying anything that comes to mind – anything.

S4E7 one of the plot lines revolves around Jake walking in on a man attempting to hang himself and follows Jake, Reggie and Bob trying to convince him to stay alive. They succeed by showing him how their own lives are a lot sadder/more pathetic than his.
It’s not really a sympathetic portrayal and more played for laughs

No bit one of the episodes features a conversation about a hypothetical in which they discuss whether they would or wouldn’t resort to cannibalism. It’s lighthearted

Is autism misrepresented?

It is called Aspergers (there are jokes about Linda pronouncing it ass-burgers) and Margaret and Becker call it a “serious disease”. So, the name is outdated and the definition is inaccurate since it would more fittingly be categorised as a disorder or disability. They also lack nuance regarding it since it’s only brought up for a series of jokes and they characterise it as something that is inherently harmful to the autistic person

S2E7 Beckers old friend from school comes back into his life. She is a trans woman and Becker initially believes her to be a friend of the friend. Upon finding out he feels betrayed and deceived since he had caught feelings for her.
There’s a lot of deadnaming and calling her a man. Relatively little he/him misgendering though.
The final message is positive if clumsy, but it’s tough to watch as a trans person.
There are also countless trans/cross-dressing “jokes” starting in S1E1

S3E19 “You Say Gay Son, I Say Godson”. After a misunderstanding Becker outs his godson to said godson’s dad. Becker thought he already knew, but he didn’t. There are also other episodes where Becker tells people that other people are gay despite that being false. It isn’t really outing but it’s uncomfortable nonetheless

Called Multiple Personality Disorder rather than D.I.D. Had some issues, but generally wasn't too bad as depictions go.

No depictions but it is mentioned in one single episode. S6E12 Subway Story. John Becker helps an elderly woman who is lost in New York. In the end they sit on a subway station bench and she tells him of her son who was killed on 9/11 and who is the reason she is on her way to visit the place where the towers used to stand. John silently comforts her by holding her hand. The moment is heartbreaking. It’s brilliantly written and acted and simplistically shot. It’s the last scene of the episode

Is religion discussed?

Becker is an atheist and Margaret is religious and an active chirch member. They regularly clash over the topic of religion. One episode specifically S5E14 targets religious beliefs influencing medical decision making. The episode essentially criticises Becker for criticising a patient who refused treatment, believing that God would heal him. Becker (even though I believe he was in the right) is portrayed as the character who needs to grow
