Mrs. Russell is very controlling of Gladys, including reading her mail, firing her maid who helps her meet a friend, and not allowing her to take an adult role in society. This is a result of her social climbing (as marriages are tools) and is largely resolved by the end of the season, but may be upsetting to viewers.
