Darcy is prescribed medication for “emotional turmoil” (the label later changes to “chronic despair”), and begins taking them in excess, even smashing the pills with a hammer and snorting them at one point. When abusing the meds, she is shown going into a portal that leads to a fantastical dreamscape, which can be interpreted as hallucinations or highs from the drugs. This all leads to an overdose, which she survives. Marcy eventually goes through the same thing.
