Isolated in his austere penthouse overlooking Central Park, obsessive Wall Street data analyst Richard Boca sees ominous patterns. His computer models are behaving erratically, as are the swarms of mosquitos breeding in his apartment, an infestation that attends his psychological meltdown.
A naked woman is shown but she is covering herself, a man sexualizes a handprint on the window, and a couple is shown in bed together, he is naked, she is fully clothed.
The film ends with the protagonist walking into a lake in Central Park (Manhattan) and staying under the surface; the implication is that he dies by drowning.
Both my husband and I are in 12 step programs, and we would say the main character is without a doubt an addict. He tortures himself throughout, is antisocial, is addicted to his work, and has lots of mental issues. Mental illness is shown in a terrible light.
The main character is a very disturbed man who doesn't handle any social interaction well. It could be viewed as a constant state of anxiety. Very unsettling.
The main character willingly offers himself for the mosquitos to feat upon for almost the entire movie. It made my husband and I SICK. truly disturbing imagery. At the end he kills himself by drowning.
Not what is usually considered gore, but in this case the constant, and I mean constant buzz of mosquitoes for the entire movie is extremely disturbing.
