Blackadder

TV Show • 1983 • Comedy

Report
Through four series and a few specials, Edmund Blackadder and his greasy sidekick Baldrick conjure up cunning plans as Edmund tries to take advantage of desperate times. These situation tragedies had obvious parallels from the Dark Ages to Elizabethan times, the rule of mad George III, and The Great War.

There is a running gag in "Amy and Amiability" (Blackadder The Third) involving a character shooting squirrels (the squirrels are not shown onscreen and their deaths are represented by a fake-sounding squeal). In "Corporal Punishment" (Blackadder Goes Forth) Blackadder's murder of Speckled Jim the carrier pigeon is a significant plot point.

A dead badger is briefly seen in the series 1 episode "Born To Be King". Baldrick is holding a dead rat in one scene in "Captain Cook", but it does not look very realistic.

In season 1 episode 5, a cat is mentioned to have been burned at the stake. Its ashes are shown comically. And in season 3 episode 1, Blackadder wears a fur coat made of cats.

Speckled Jim, the carrier pigeon killed by Blackadder in "Corporal Punishment", is revealed to have been a personal pet of Melchett's. In "Private Plane" we hear a story about how Melchett was responsible for the death of George's childhood pet rabbit. In "Goodbyeee" Baldrick mentions several pets he has kept in the trenches that have not survived.

Off-screen. We hear that Captain Rum was eaten by cannibals at the end of "Potato".

At the end of series 1, a character is shown to have bandaged stumps on his arms and bandages where his ears were. The amputation is not shown though.

Individual series finales always end with the death of at least one major character (usually more), although due to the nature of the show we see new incarnations of many of them in subsequent series.
Most of these are played for dark comedy, but the deaths in "Goodbyeee" (of Blackadder Goes Forth) are a huge exception.

The first episode, "The Foretelling", involves Blackadder being haunted by the ghost of Richard III. In general, supernatural content is quite rare across the series, however.

Debatably. A recurring character, as a result of society's expectations of gender, presents as male (she is female).

In Bells, Baldrick is a bridesmaid and Percy kisses him before realising he’s a man. There are several jokes around it which could be offensive but that is the main one.
In Major Star, George does a drag act and there is a similar joke and Melchett falls in love with him. In both instances, the main character (blackadder) insults them and makes jokes around it.

Very minimal violence onscreen, and always played for laughs, but the impact of it (green severed heads, etc) is shown.

"Duel and Duality": A character is shot and killed on screen. It's not graphic; he just falls down and there's no blood or visible injury.
