Is there genital trauma/mutilation?

It doesn’t happen, but I’m saying yes because a medical procedure that was done during childbirth is described plainly and there’s a brief time in the story where there’s a possibility the procedure will be done if the patient can’t deliver her baby. There’s also a catheter applied, which isn’t mutilation, but might be uncomfortable to read about.

It is mentioned “offscreen”. A patient has an abusive husband that the audience never encounters in person. It is implied that the character made a plan to set boundaries and/or leave the husband after she had her child.

Not nude, but there are plenty of descriptions of genitalia in the context of childbirth. Technically they were wearing clothes but still.

An abused person makes a plan to tell her abuser he has to stop or she will leave. It’s implied she’ll follow through with her promise on behalf of her newborn but the audience doesn’t find out what happens to her after that.

There would be if there could be but it’s 1918. Lots of talk of unwanted children being given to the church. The main character talks about how much damage is done to women without access to birth control.

The main character decides to adopt a baby after its mother died. This decision could be considered to be a bit like abduction but there’s no one the baby is being taken from.
The baby has no known relatives and a nun thinks the baby should go to an orphanage and tries to take the baby from the main character. The main character gets the baby back from the nun within minutes, unharmed.

A character who is not immune to the flu knowingly exposes themself to the disease to assist patients, which leads to catching the flu and dying. It was more of a gamble than a sacrifice, but it was definitely unnecessary. The main character describes this as some sort of soul bargain for a different person.

There are multiple births described in explicit detail and every single one of them would qualify as a traumatizing birth experience. There is a lot of poor medical advice given (good advice for 1918, but bad advice), there is a debilitating and now illegal operation that almost, but doesn’t, happen. None of these birth stories are peaceful and empowering. I can’t in good conscience recommend anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive reads this book.
