How is there not excessive gore? While it is low poly and far from realistic, enemies often are blown to bits, dismembered, decapitated, cut in half etc. The arena is often drenched in blood after a battle. There is an option to turn off gore, it turns off the blood, but enemies still break apart.

Actually there are multiple (albeit infrequent) instances of strong profanity. If your style meter goes into sss it says SSSH*TSTORM. A secret level in Lust has uses of the F-Word, the terminals after the p-1 and p-2 bosses, a plush doll in the credits museum and a hidden boss in the Greed Layer. The one players will hear no matter what is when you defeat Gabriel in the final level of act 1.

The game takes inspiration Dante's Inferno and it's concept of the 9 circles of Hell in Christian mythology. Gabriel is an angel that serves the Heavenly Council, there are several mentions of God (ie "Righteous hand of the Father," "The Father's Light," "God is dead," etc.) and terminal entries found after the secret levels are written by God Himself. The main theme of the game as well is a critique on religion and how it oppresses and hurts minorities.
