I watched with the intention of noting all the sad animal timestamps for everyone, but if a dog died then I must have missed it. The only time I saw a dog was once in a wide view at a distance, and nothing happened to it that I saw.
SPOILER - this is a major plot point of the show, but comes to a head in the latter half of season 2. Several pregnant women are housed in an enclave until they give birth. Unknown to them, their children are all potentially kidnap victims. One is kidnapped immediately after birth.
I did my best to catch everything pertaining to animal death/suffering that I could. Mostly it wasn't too graphic. Never saw any dogs or cats die.
S1E3 08:15-08:25 Horse death- quick and mostly offscreen, you see them lunge at it and hear some panicky neighing
13:57-14:13 Horse death- they bite then you hear neighing and see the horse on the ground, it was dark and difficult to see well enough to be sure, but it seemed to be kept offscreen after that. No more sounds after timestamp
S1E5 10:55-11:00 Animal abuse- what appears to be the full body of a dead(?) pig is on display
14:49-15:25 Animal death- offscreen. whole roasting pig shown several times, then we learn it was the one previously seen alive on the cargo ship
S2 E1 22:43-22:51 Animal sacrifice- offscreen, bloody cow head shown
24:36-26:41 Animal sacrifice- offscreen, dead crow still bleeding, religious/divination
S2E5 03:30-03:36 butchering- up close gory butchering of part of an animal, with a goat being lead in, though nothing happens to it onscreen
Cannibalism is a MAJOR theme from the first episode, and many people are shown (unknowingly) eating human meat on camera. There is also a scene in the first episode where a woman discovers a human finger or toe in a soup pot.
Many monsters are burnt throughout the show as a way to fight them. There's also a scene in the later episodes where a woman puts a flaming cloak over herself and a baby to protect them as she runs away from monsters, but only for a few seconds and neither are burnt.
Monsters who were formerly human are buried because they are believed to be dead bodies, but they later emerge out of the ground. They are not technically 'alive' when they are buried but it could be interpreted this way.
This is a very gory show. I’m not sure if it’s excessive, but it’s what I would expect in a zombie show, there are bites, broken bones and strong bodily violence for extended scenes.
Several women are killed after giving birth to babies. There are also young children in the show who are crying because their parents are missing and/or dead.
There is a woman in one scene who acts as a fortune-teller for the queen and performs a ritual to see the future. Her body convulses as if she is possessed or having a seizure, but it isn't explicitly known if she was possessed or not.
Sort of - there is one scene in season 2 where a man is in an outhouse. It's implied he's pooping, but the act is not shown at all. A later shot implies he escapes the outhouse by using the drainage system which is shown to have fecal matter in and around it. He's not actually shown escaping that way.
A character is shown with blood on her shoe under her gown. In the next scene, lightly bloody garments are destroyed. It is implied this is due to menstrual blood. It took three watches to connect the dots. It's subtle and vague.
The childbirth scenes are not graphic, but we see women preparing to give birth and experiencing contractions. There are also the sounds of women in pain while having contractions but no blood or graphic scenes.
