It's implied that the killer is killing dogs in the area. At the starts of the movie we hear on the radio that the police identified him after following the trail of missing dogs. Later, the girls see missing dog posters at the gas station. The cashier says that the dogs have been eaten by bears. We do not see any of the dogs actually get killed.

Alix continues to v* into a bucket at 1 hr 14 min. twice, the second time is a POV onto the camera and is very graphic.
