The whole movie has a lot to do with how the protagonist can no longer breathe on his own and needs a ventilator to live. There is one particularly nasty scene where the dog accidentally unplugs the ventilator, and for a few minutes you see the protagonist desperately trying breathe, and trying to tell his wife what happened. He passes out, but he survives. It's a few minutes of agony to watch, though.
