In the 2nd chapter of the book, everyone is starving. Beginning with the very first sentence, Isabel has found a starving kitten. The story tells us that the people are now eating pets, after having eaten all the farm animals and zoo animals. None of the animal deaths are explicitly "seen".

(Cats in general, and not described in detail).
In the 2nd chapter of the book, it is 1994 in Cuba, and everyone is starving. Beginning with the very first sentence, Isabel has found a starving kitten, which she pets & shares a few beans with. The story mentions that people have been eating all the cats (& have already eaten the farm animals, zoo animals, and dogs). None of it is described in detail or "seen". Isabel promises the kitten that she will hide it & keep it safe.
