General Ghengis Khan Schmitz bullies Jojo and insults him ("pathetic" etc) and forces him to stop using his imagination. He also treats other children similarly when he is "training" them in a militaristic way, he proudly states that he "scares children out of their wits." Mayzie is also an extremely neglectful mother and abandons her child just because she would rather go on vacation than care for the child. Horton adopts the child though so the ending ends up totally happy.

His parents try to suppress this instead of accepting it and even send him to military school to try to force it out of him. All of this behavior is clearly portrayed as wrong.
