Suzume, 17, lost her mother as a little girl. On her way to school, she meets a mysterious young man. But her curiosity unleashes a calamity that endangers the entire population of Japan, and so Suzume embarks on a journey to set things right.
the abandonment of the main character is a central theme of the movie although if her mother really left her voluntarily is a spoiler
[SPOILERS AHEAD] it turns out in the end that her mother actually died of natural causes and what she remembers as her mother sending her away is her future self that leads her childhood self back to her home
There is a moment of verbal abuse from guardian to 16 year old during a heated argument but the character knows she doesn’t fully mean what the aunt is yelling. Especially since the aunt is then shown to be possessed or under the influence of a cat god.
Technically, yes. But it’s only in the sense that someone sees something and the main character finds an excuse to say that’s not what they are actually seeing. For example, telling the children that the moving and talking chair is a robot with AI (when it’s not). When the cat talks and the main character is able to convince them that the cat didn’t actually speak.
There's a scene where the main character squeezes the cat really hard in anger and refuses to let go even as he's telling her it's hurting him and begging her to stop. She nearly throws him, too, but stops herself right before actually doing it and just drops him on the ground instead. She then tells him she doesn't love him, which makes him very sad and revert back to a thin, malnourished state, though he recovers later. She is very mean to the cat and never apologizes.
There is a heart breaking scene where the cat Daijin turns back into its original keystone form after saying “sorry I couldn’t be your cat”. I was crying like a baby because I lost my cat a few weeks prior to seeing the movie. So bring tissues.
There's butterflies shown multiple times, and also the main enemy is referred to as a worm, though it's not buglike at all imo, it's just a giant monster/god that's vaguely in the shape of a worm.
One character - a talking cat - is shown being yelled at by the main character, at this, the cat is shown visibly upset and slowly walks away (also when upset, the cat gets significantly thinner, showing its ribs due to how thin it becomes - not sure if that counts for this category in particular but just to make sure) However, they do reconcile later on
someone tells a girl that she could kiss awake her friend. at one point she almost does it and lies about it. at another point it's implied that she did it and she lies about it again.
There’s no amputation shown, but Souta’s grandfather is in the hospital and he only has one arm. It’s not too noticeable, not even mentioned and the scene doesn’t last long.
i think there is a scene that could be triggering where a character feels like they're lost in their own body/form. but since it's used in a pretty phantasitcal way its not too bad I think
The main character is 17, in her junior year of high school, in love with a guy who's stated (at least in the dub) to be in his final year of grad school. She's very explicitly in love with him, like she has a HUGE crush on this guy, she's willing to sacrifice everything for him, and she also kisses him multiple times while he's asleep (... in chair form). On the guy's end, I'd say it's kept vague whether he actually reciprocates her feelings in a romantic way, or if he's just fond of her in a platonic way after everything she's done for him... or maybe that's just my desperate wishful thinking that it could be interpreted as a one-sided crush. They never "officially" get together or anything, but... this movie definitely feels romantic.
One instance where a cat & the main character are running through traffic, there's a lot of honking and tires screeching during that sequence. And then another instance where they almost crash their car into an oncoming vehicle, but manage to swerve away in time.
Multiple moments where blood is shown: Souta gets an arm injury in the beginning, and then later on, you can see blood on Suzume's feet, and also going down the drain when she washes it off. Nothing too bad.
as with many anime films there is imagery associated with the mushroom cloud but I think this film is more about natural disasters. no nuclear power is mentioned I the movie
