A dog is run over early in the story. The narration describes it's suffering in detail, to the point that Edgar mercy-kills it with his powers.

In addition to the dog early in the story, an alligator is shot and killed towards the end of the book. In my copy it’s pages 661-662. It is in self-defense, but it’s still very vivid.

A heron is shot and killed pages 721-722. Self-defense again, much quicker and less descriptive than the alligator.
