In addition to the dog early in the story, an alligator is shot and killed towards the end of the book. In my copy it’s pages 661-662. It is in self-defense, but it’s still very vivid.
A heron is shot and killed pages 721-722. Self-defense again, much quicker and less descriptive than the alligator.
Edgar attacks his wife Pam with a plastic knife while in the hospital and delirious from pain and meds. She cites this as one of her main reasons for divorcing him, whereas he refuses to accept it as a valid reason for her to want to leave him.
