A songbird eats maggots. A baby songbird falls out of a nest and dies. A pigeon's neck is snapped so its body can be studied, and other pigeons are implied to meet the same fate. A wild rabbit is killed by a fox.

Darwin kills many of his own pigeons to study their anatomy, but he seems to treat them more like livestock than like pets.

There is a dead rabbit (I think?) being decomposed by maggots. A time lapse also shows maggots eating the body of a baby bird. Numerous dead pigeons are shown in various states of skeletonization. A fox kills a rabbit and is shown carrying its limp body. There's a nightmare sequence with a dead scorpion and several dead animal fetuses in jars that come to life.

The death of Darwin's daughter is a major character motivation throughout the film.
